As part of your Initial Employment Training, you will complete a Diploma of Building Design through TAFE NSW in Ultimo, NSW. This will require you to relocate to this area to complete your study on campus. Army will assist with your relocation.
Upon completion of your Initial Employment Training, your first posting will likely be to one of the primary posting locations below, where you enhance your skills received through formal training.
Primary posting locations include:

<li>Brisbane, QLD</li>
<li>Ipswich, QLD</li>
</ul>
There may be opportunities to post to other locations based on service need, career development needs and individual preferences.
You may also have the opportunity to deploy overseas on operations during your career.

You will be paid while you train, and on completion of your Initial Military Training and Employment Training, you’ll earn at least:

In the Army you'll get paid a good salary from day one regardless of your age, experience or qualifications; and your pay increases as you progress through training. In addition to your salary you'll receive a variety of allowances, extra pay for relevant qualifications – plus 16.4% superannuation, a far higher rate than you're likely to find in the civilian world.

As a Draughtsperson, when the Army needs something built, you’ll make it happen. Be the one to solve complex construction challenges in a rewarding role that elevates your skills to be a highly trained structural designer. 
What You’ll Do
As a Draughtsperson, you’ll combine your mathematical skills and passion for architecture to create detailed designs and construction plans on various projects. These range from the design and development of military structures, to the repair and maintenance of civilian structures as part of humanitarian assistance. 
Your time will be spent visiting sites to understand the bespoke design requirements for each project, then bringing them to life using 3D technologies. 
In this role, you’ll learn to:
<ul>
<li>Conduct client briefings and meetings to determine design philosophy and functional requirements</li>
<li>Conduct site investigations, surveys and analysis, and prepare sketches to develop concept design</li>
<li>Create 3D CAD (Computer-Aided Drawing) model flythroughs</li> 
<li>Apply building codes and regulatory requirements to develop design and documentation</li></ul>
Not only will you tackle a larger variety of projects than non-military roles, you’ll also regularly travel to field sites, and get the opportunity to take part in tactical field environments. You’ll also have opportunities to get close to the action, working with Combat, Engineering, Infantry and Cavalry units.
Training and Progression 
You don’t need any prior experience to join. You’ll learn everything you need to know through your Initial Employment Training (IET). Upon completion, your first posting will likely be to Sydney, Brisbane or Ipswich. 
You’ll learn all the skills you need for the role, including site inspection and assessment, designing compliant products, and creating building layouts for a range of sites, while adhering to legal, compliance, and risk management requirements. You will also master the technical skills to model building design projects and create 3D models using CAD software.
Throughout your career you’ll have opportunities to gain your Civil Construction Induction Card (White Card) as well opportunities for further training in Building and Construction management. 
Additional Information
You’ll be given high levels of responsibility from day one. You’ll leverage your quick-thinking and resourcefulness to work autonomously, juggle multiple projects and work to tight deadlines. The benefit is you’ll develop a wider range of skills than non-military careers, enjoy regular travel and engage with people from different cultures. 
Throughout your career you’ll be vital to a range of military projects, from the design and development of military structures, to supporting humanitarian assistance operations.
