Receive nationally recognised trade training
Join the ADF and learn a trade. You&rsquo;ll receive all the training you need, be paid while you train and can earn industry-recognised qualifications.

You'll be paid while you train, and on completion of your Initial Military Training and Employment Training, you’ll earn at least:

As a Mechanic Nuclear Submariner, you&rsquo;ll play an important role in an historic moment - the deployment of Australia&rsquo;s first conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines. The addition of nuclear-powered submarines to the Navy fleet is a game-changer. The superior stealth, speed and range offered by the new submarines will help the Navy contribute to Australia&rsquo;s long-term defence needs.

Working with a team of highly trained technicians on next-generation submarines, you&rsquo;ll operate and maintain the steam-powered nuclear propulsion plant onboard a Navy submarine to the highest standards of safety and security. You&rsquo;ll play an important role, overseeing the nuclear reactor that powers the propulsion system as well as the associated mechanical systems and equipment.
Your work will require the highest standards of operational nuclear safety and security. To enable you to perform your duties, you&rsquo;ll undergo a comprehensive induction into the Nuclear Mindset. Drawing on the established nuclear cultures in the United Kingdom and the United States, Navy and the Australian Submarine Agency (ASA) have developed the Nuclear Mindset &ndash; a set of 10 principles to guide our nuclear workforce. Keeping your crew, our people, the public and the environment safe and secure is paramount. By adopting the Nuclear Mindset, you&rsquo;ll help Navy achieve those goals.
