Receive nationally recognised trade training
Join the ADF and learn a trade. You&rsquo;ll receive all the training you need, be paid while you train and can earn industry-recognised qualifications.

As a Mechanical Fitter Nuclear Submariner, you&rsquo;ll play an important role in an historic moment &ndash; the deployment of Australia&rsquo;s first conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines. You&rsquo;ll contribute to the day-to-day operation and combat survivability of the submarine, maintaining the non-nuclear mechanical systems that protect the submarine&rsquo;s living environment. This includes ensuring there is air to breathe, water to drink, plumbing systems are working smoothly, and diesel engines are available if needed. You&rsquo;ll also ensure the submarine&rsquo;s hatches and doors remain watertight and quiet.

You&rsquo;ll be responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of submarine auxiliary equipment, including hydraulic power plants, hoists and cylinders, oxygen generators and atmosphere control equipment, refrigeration systems, seawater and freshwater systems, pressurised air systems, and emergency diesel engines. You&rsquo;ll also be responsible for the firefighting and damage control equipment onboard. You&rsquo;ll work with your hands in submarine auxiliary spaces and be part of a close-knit team that troubleshoots issues and makes necessary repairs to keep the submarine mission-ready.
Your work will require the highest standards of operational nuclear safety and security. To enable you to perform your duties, you&rsquo;ll undergo a comprehensive induction into the Nuclear Mindset. Drawing on the established nuclear cultures in the United Kingdom and the United States, Navy and the Australian Submarine Agency (ASA) have developed the Nuclear Mindset &ndash; a set of 10 principles to guide our nuclear workforce. Keeping your crew, our people, the public and the environment safe and secure is paramount. By adopting the Nuclear Mindset, you&rsquo;ll help Navy achieve those goals.
