PEOPLE AND DIVERSITY
Our commitment
Multicultural diversity
Representing the multicultural diversity of Australia is important. That's why we offer a broad range of roles, across a variety of disciplines and professions, to all eligible Australians regardless of their background. Our selection processes are free from cultural, racial and gender bias, and we believe this approach brings a unique blend of skills, strengths and knowledge to our operations.
Equal opportunities
We’re committed to finding the very best people for each job based on education, aptitude and potential. Then through training and sponsored education, we invest in the development of all individuals, regardless of their background.
LGBTIQA+
The ADF believes in inclusion and respect, values the contribution of its diverse workforce and is committed to providing a supportive environment for all individuals. We openly embrace the LGBTQIA+ community and believe that everyone should have the opportunity to serve their nation proudly and without prejudice.
Careers for women
Women can expect excellent career opportunities with equal salaries, training, vocational development and promotion opportunities. Flexibility exists for many of our job roles including choosing where you work, joining when it suits you, convenient start dates, roles with just a 2-year commitment and receiving financial assistance for specialised roles, noting these offerings are all conditional.
Pathways for Indigenous Australians
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders can discover excellent employment options in the ADF. There’s also a supportive community, cultural networks and plenty of opportunities for education and advancement. Flexible entry pathways may be offered to those with specific location or timing needs, or those who do not yet reach the fitness or schooling standards generally required for entry into the ADF. You can find more information here.

Faith in the ADF
We are proud to have a diverse workforce and are committed to attracting and recruiting people that represent the Australian population. The Religious Advisory Committee to the Services (RACS) advises the Chief of the Defence Force and the Service Chiefs on religious matters and provides a link between the ADF and the governing bodies of faith groups. Established in 1981, RACS has representation from various faiths and denominations.
