All Officers will serve in fleet units and shore establishments around Australia based on service need. Individual preferences for posting location will be taken into account where possible. Many opportunities also exist for short periods (4 - 6 months) of operational service overseas.

Intelligence Officers in the Navy can expect to be employed in the provision of intelligence to Maritime and Joint operations at sea and ashore, through postings to Fleet Headquarters in Sydney, Headquarters Northern Command in Darwin, and Headquarters Joint Operations Command in Canberra.

In the national strategic intelligence and collection agencies such as Australian Signals Directorate (ASD), Defence Intelligence Organisation (DIO) and the Australian Geospatial-Intelligence Organisation (AGO), Intelligence Officers will contribute to the national intelligence effort as specialists and all-source intelligence analysts.

Intelligence Officers may also be employed in instructional positions at the Defence Intelligence Training Centre in Canungra, QLD as well as staff officer positions in Canberra in the Navy Information Warfare Branch and Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group.
 
There are also Intelligence Officer positions at the Royal Australian Navy Tactical Electronic Warfare Support Section in Nowra, NSW, the Joint Electronic Warfare Operational Support Unit in Adelaide, SA, and overseas exchange intelligence positions, mainly within the United States.

You will be paid while you study. On completion of your degree, Initial Military Training and Initial Employment Training, you'll earn at least:

In the Navy you'll get paid a good salary from day one regardless of your age, experience or qualifications; and your pay increases as you progress through training. In addition to your salary you'll receive a variety of allowances, extra pay for relevant qualifications – plus 16.4% superannuation, a far higher rate than you're likely to find in the civilian world.

As an Intelligence Officer (known in the Navy as Navy Intelligence Officer) you will provide intelligence support to commanders and staff at all levels, both at sea and ashore. This role requires a high degree of mental agility as well as the ability to quickly synthesise and critically analyse information. Critical thinking skills are paramount as you will operate in the tactical, operational and strategic levels and integrate within a variety of joint and inter-governmental agencies. Your role will see you managing unpredictable circumstances, leading teams of highly trained individuals and working autonomously.
Your duties include, but aren&rsquo;t limited to:
<ul>
 <li>Preparing and presenting intelligence briefs, conducting debriefs, providing advice to ship's company and commanders at all levels from tactical to strategic</li>
 <li>Analysing and preparing assessments of maritime activities affecting Australia's interests</li>
 <li>Carrying out intelligence analysis tasks</li>
 <li>Interpreting the significance of intelligence data/reports to the conduct of selected Navy operations</li>
</ul>
You may also be employed in various non-specific intelligence areas, such as training and instructing. At various times throughout your career you will be required to deploy in ships or submarines on exercises or operations. 
Throughout your career as an Intelligence Officer, you will progress from participating in the general intelligence staff process, either as a staff officer or operator, to managing and leading the intelligence process. Staff Officer positions exist at several levels within policy development, capability development, project management, career management and workforce management.
