Earn a fully funded degree
Originating from a unique partnership between the ADF and the University of New South Wales (UNSW), ADFA offers world-class education plus cutting-edge military and leadership training at our Canberra campus. In addition to being expertly trained in the art of leadership and management, you'll undertake a degree in Arts, Business, Science, Engineering or Computing.
Who it&rsquo;s for:&nbsp;Those wanting a fully funded world-class degree from the University of New South Wales (UNSW). You&rsquo;ll earn a salary while you study and graduate HELP-debt-free.

This entry method is currently not recruiting.

Officer Entry: Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA)

You'll be paid while you study. On completion of your degree, Initial Military Training and Initial Employment Training, you'll earn at least:

In the Army you'll be paid a good salary from day one regardless of your age, experience or qualifications.

Officer Entry: ADFA

You’ll be encouraged to continuously improve your qualifications and may be eligible to access further training opportunities over the course of your career. This may include a master’s degree or postgraduate certificate in Science (Flight Test Engineers Course). Each year, an Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Aviation Officer is selected to conduct the course in Canada, the UK or USA.

Become an officer with your existing degree
If you have a recognised degree in a field such as Medicine, Law, Dentistry, Nursing, Engineering, Business or IT, you can apply for an officer role through Graduate Entry. Whether you're a recent graduate or in a career, you&rsquo;ll receive further training and postgraduate study opportunities in the ADF.
Who it&rsquo;s for:&nbsp;Those who already have a recognised degree and want to receive further training and postgraduate study opportunities. You&rsquo;ll pursue your profession as an officer and add an exciting new dimension to your work.

You'll be paid while you train, and on completion of your Initial Military Training and Employment Training, you’ll earn at least:

Have your current studies sponsored
As an undergraduate studying for a role-relevant degree at an accredited university of your choice, you can join the ADF via Defence University Sponsorship (DUS). This means you&rsquo;ll have your fees paid for, earn a salary while you complete your degree, and walk straight into a great ADF role following graduation.
Who it&rsquo;s for:&nbsp;Those already studying a relevant degree (or in some cases, those who have accepted an offer) at an Australian university. You&rsquo;ll earn a salary while you study and have the remainder of your university fees paid in return for a commitment to an officer role.

Drawing on your training and expertise in Avionics Engineering, you’ll lead a team of highly trained soldiers to ensure the availability of Army’s advanced fleet of rotary-wing aircraft. You’ll get to work on advanced aircraft such as the AH-64E Apache, UH-60M Black Hawk, CH-47F Chinook and Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS). 
With new aircraft acquisitions currently in progress and the constant demand for helicopters and uncrewed aerial systems to support Army operations, you’ll get to work on a range of exciting projects over the course of your career. Specifically, you’ll be engaged in a range of maintenance, logistics and engineering management functions relating to Army’s fleet of helicopters and uncrewed aerial systems.

Your first posting will be to an Army aviation squadron or an Army aircraft program office as a junior engineer. In addition to gaining hands-on experience with aircraft, you’ll play an important role in managing the maintenance team and ensuring helicopter airworthiness and availability is maintained. Working as an engineer in an aviation squadron, you may also have opportunities to lead a maintenance team in support of international aviation operations. The recent acquisition of the AH-64E Apache and UH-60M Black Hawk has required many Army Aviation Engineering Officers to work as project engineers both within Australia and as part of our resident team in the United States of America.
Additional employment opportunities lie in engineering and maintenance planning, flight test engineering and project management. Army’s Aviation Engineering Officers also perform logistic management and design engineering roles within the Army Aviation Systems Branch. Opportunities within this area may include the implementation of a modification program for Army helicopters and approving structural repair designs for aircraft. Army Aviation Engineering Officers also have a range of opportunities for overseas travel and/or postgraduate study.
