All submariners will spend the majority of their careers based out of HMAS Stirling, WA. There are a number of other shore postings available at various locations around Australia.

You will be paid while you train, and on completion of your Initial Military Training and Employment Training, you’ll earn at least:

In the Navy you'll get paid a good salary from day one regardless of your age, experience or qualifications; and your pay increases as you progress through training. In addition to your salary you'll receive a variety of allowances, extra pay for relevant qualifications – plus 16.4% superannuation, a far higher rate than you're likely to find in the civilian world.

Manage, analyse and monitor communications, signals and systems to keep your team in-the-know throughout the submarine. 
Whether you have recently finished school, currently studying, already in the workforce or you have no experience at all, you'll be paid from day one. You'll gain all the skills needed with extensive on-the-job training. 
As a Communication Networks Operator Submariner (known in the Navy as Communications and Information Systems Submariner), you&rsquo;ll operate the Navy&rsquo;s subsurface secure communications and IT systems ensuring that the lines of communication remain uninterrupted. You&rsquo;ll act as the communications hub onboard, receiving, sending and providing all communication and information to relevant Defence organisations, Command and crew. 
In this diverse role, your day could include handling sensitive material, maintaining networks, interacting with classified information or providing communications advice to your team. 
Your roles will include, but aren&rsquo;t limited to:

 <li>Monitor operational and communications security </li>
 <li>	Information Warfare operations/advice</li>
 <li>	Operating basic cryptographic equipment</li>
 <li>	Processing military messages</li>
 <li>	Operation of commercial and military satellite system communications</li>
 <li>	Network administration, security and cryptography</li>
 <li>	Role based access control and multi-factor authentication</li>
 <li>	Device and network troubleshooting</li>
 <li>	End user support</li>
 <li>	Application and software support</li>
 <li>	System Configuration</li>
 <li>	Management of cyber security risks and threats</li>
 <li>	Database fundamentals</li>
 <li>	Ceremonial requirements </li>
 <li>	Visual signalling procedures, including morse code by flashing light</li>
 <li>	Maritime safety communications</li>
 <li>	Submarine specific roles</li>
</ul>
As a CIS Submariner you are part of a close team and in addition to watch keeping in your main role, you will have ancillary roles that may include helmsperson, navigation, and operations of submarine specific systems. When alongside the wharf, you will participate as part of a larger team, in a wide variety of tasks to keep the submarine safe and secure, at its peak readiness.
You&rsquo;ll work in the most unique workplace in Australia having a direct effect on Defence missions and operations at sea. You will also perform additional roles and learn new skills to become highly trained and efficient in supporting the whole submarine. This may include security, firefighting, flood response, first aid, ammunitioning, ceremonial duties or medical emergency response.
