On completion of the New Entry Officers Course (NEOC), you will likely be posted to a position in Canberra in the Australian Capital Territory where they will rotate between different Legal Directorates varying in time from 3 to 6 months.&nbsp;You may be posted to Navy&rsquo;s Fleet Headquarters in Sydney, or a ship or elsewhere during this time. Specific postings will be determined by Navy subject to service needs and other relevant factors.

You will be paid while you train, and on completion of your Initial Military Training and Employment Training, you’ll earn at least:

In the Navy you'll get paid a good salary from day one regardless of your age, experience or qualifications; and your pay increases as you progress through training. In addition to your salary you'll receive a variety of allowances, extra pay for relevant qualifications – plus 16.4% superannuation, a far higher rate than you're likely to find in the civilian world.

As a Navy Lawyer (known in the Navy and the Australian Defence Force as a legal officer), there is no better way for you to be exposed to a wide range of legal issues in a relatively short time-span.&nbsp;All this while being a member of a close knit team charged with protecting Australia&rsquo;s national interests.&nbsp;
As well as gaining legal experience in a wide range of areas, some of these unique to the military, you will also gain professional Naval and military skills, personnel and welfare management and leadership skills. 
The Defence Legal Division is responsible for the provision of legal advice and other legal services to the ADF, the Department of Defence and the Ministers on legal matters. The Defence Legal Division includes ADF and civilian lawyers. While most of the civilian lawyers are located in Canberra, the ADF legal officers are posted around Australia and in some overseas locations. 
A Navy legal officers primary duty is to advise Command. Navy legal officers contribute to Navy's mission by providing specialist advice in the core legal areas of legal practice in the Navy, which are military discipline, military administrative law and military operations law. In addition to the provision of specialist legal advice, Navy legals officers may also appear as advocates in Defence inquiries, or as prosecuting or defending Officers before Courts-Martial and Defence Force magistrate trials.
Like all government lawyers, Navy legal officers are required to be knowledgeable in a wide range of areas of law, including constitutional law, criminal/discipline and regulatory law, general administrative law, freedom of information and privacy law, statutory interpretation law, employment and workplace relations law, work health and safety law, environmental law, public governance and accountability law, human rights law, conflicts of interest law, official information and secrecy law, public relations law, and legal ethics.
<div class="p" >Additional Duties</div>
In addition to their legal duties, you will likely be appointed as a Divisional Officer, responsible&nbsp;for the management and welfare of those sailors and officers within your division. 
You might also be required to qualify as an Officer of the Day (OOD) and carry out OOD duties. The OOD is the Commanding Officers (CO) representative for a 24 hour period and is directly responsible to the CO for the safety and security of the Ship and personnel onboard.

Expand your legal expertise across new areas of both civilian and military law, with the primary duty of providing Navy Command with specialist legal advice.
