Year 1 to 3 (minimum) Fleet Base – East (FBE), Sydney NSW or Fleet Base – West (FBW) in Western Australia on completion of Navy Entry Sailor Course (NESC) and initial employment training (IET). 

On completion of further on-the-job training and experience (12-18 months from completion of IET), Navy Imagery Specialists can expect to be deployed frequently on RAN major, minor war vessels, and submarines in support of Navy’s mission in the maritime environment. 

After 3-4 years posted to Fleet Base East or West (4-5 years from recruitment), there are potential posting locations within Australia (HMAS Establishments Albatross, Cerberus, Coonawarra, and ACT Region.

You will be paid while you train, and on completion of your Initial Military Training and Employment Training, you’ll earn at least:

In the Navy you'll get paid a good salary from day one regardless of your age, experience or qualifications; and your pay increases as you progress through training. In addition to your salary you'll receive a variety of allowances, extra pay for relevant qualifications – plus 16.4% superannuation, a far higher rate than you're likely to find in the civilian world.

General Entry: Non-Technical

Navy IS will have opportunities to complete further job specific and career development training throughout their career. Attendance at these courses will be programmed on an ‘as required' basis.

A career as a Navy Photographer Imagery Specialist (IS) is one of the most diverse and varied careers in the ADF. In the course of your duties domestically and internationally, you will photograph, film, and process Navy’s wide and impressive capability – all through the lens of a camera.

Navy IS are also one of the most deployable capabilities in the Navy – if there is a Navy story worth telling to the Australian people, there is a good chance a Navy IS is there to capture the action. You will deploy either independently, or as a member of a Military Camera Team, depending on the task or tasks at hand. 

Navy IS are trained to industry standard and attain the nationally recognised CUA41115 Certificate IV in Photography and Photo Imaging within the first 6 months of military training with opportunities for further continuation training throughout their career. 

Navy IS are equipped with industry leading equipment and are constantly learning new photographic and video techniques, as the industry progresses quickly with innovative technology developments. It is an exciting time to learn, develop skills, knowledge, and experience to become an expert in multi-media content creation and editing.
