<p>All sailors will serve in fleet units and shore establishments on a rotational basis.</p>

<div class="p" >As a Sonar Operator, the majority of your postings will be in Western Australia, working onboard submarines operating from HMAS <em>Stirling</em> or shore-based support positions. There are also requirements for interstate postings to the Joint  Acoustic Analysis Centre (AJAAC) at HMAS <em>Albatross</em>, Nowra, NSW or various Defence organisations within Canberra, ACT and other eastern shore-based positions. There is also the opportunity to apply for an overseas exchange position as you progress your career as an Sonar Operator.</div>

You will be paid while you train, and on completion of your Initial Military Training and Employment Training, you’ll earn at least:

In the Navy you'll get paid a good salary from day one regardless of your age, experience or qualifications; and your pay increases as you progress through training.<br><br>In addition to your salary you'll receive a variety of allowances, extra pay for relevant qualifications – plus 16.4% superannuation, a far higher rate than you're likely to find in the civilian world.

<div class="p"><strong> Acoustic Warfare Analysis Supervisor Course (AWA 2)</strong></div>
<div class="p">Location: STSC, HMAS <em>Stirling</em>, WA</div>
<p>Duration: 10 Weeks</p>
<p>This is the supervisors course for promotion to Leading Seaman and consists of instruction in:</p>
<ul>
    <li>Oceanography and weather</li>
    <li>Brief presentation and preparation</li>
    <li>Aural and narrowband analysis</li>
    <li>Supervision of sonar watch</li>
    <li>2 week practical component in the combat system trainer for practical instruction on watch supervision; and</li>
    <li>Operations and a practical assessment</li>
</ul>
<div class="p"><strong>Acoustic Warfare Analysis Managers Course (AWA 3)</strong></div>
<div class="p">Location: STSC, HMAS <em>Stirling</em>, WA</div>
<p>Duration: 6 Weeks</p>
<p>This advanced training is designed to give the POAWASM the skills to play a major lead in the Control Room Command Team. This training is to be completed before promotion to Petty Officer.</p>
<p>As a qualified POAWASM you may also be selected to undertake advanced acoustic analysis course that are conducted in the UK or Canada.</p>
<div class="p"><strong>&nbsp;Acoustic Warfare Analyst &ndash; Acoustic Specialist (AWA4-AS)&nbsp;</strong></div>
<div class="p">Location:&nbsp;Submarine Force (SUBFOR) Headquarters HMAS <em>Stirling</em>, WA&nbsp;</div>
<p>Duration: 12-18 months</p>
<p>The&nbsp;AWA4-AS, is by selection only and is&nbsp;advanced training&nbsp;conducted under a detailed Learning and Development Strategy,&nbsp;designed to&nbsp;provide the candidate at the Chief Petty Officer level the skills as an Acoustic Specialist to enhance and lead the Submarine Command Team during acoustic operations.</p>

<p><strong>As a Sonar Operator</strong> (known in the Navy as Acoustic Warfare Analyst Submariner) you will be trained to operate, supervise and manage all passive and active sonars and acoustic sensors onboard submarines. You&rsquo;ll undergo extensive training to learn how to detect, track and classify noise sources in the ocean, passing the critical information that you gather on to Command. This role is vital to protecting the submarine from being detected and helps keeps Australia&rsquo;s maritime environment free from the threat of enemy attack.</p>
<p>In this role, you'll be operating some of the most advanced systems in the Navy, making tactical recommendations relating to the information and data that you receive. You&rsquo;ll also be responsible for general seamanship duties that vary depending if the submarine is surfaced, dived or alongside the wharf.</p>
<p>When the submarine is on the surface, you'll take part in roles such as control room watch-keeper, lookout, helmsperson, first responder to incidents, anchor party and boat or helicopter transfer teams. When the submarine is dived, you'll keep watch as a sonar operator and fulfil a range of supporting positions including navigator&rsquo;s assistant, and damage control or survival equipment sailor. When alongside the wharf, you'll participate as a larger team in a wide variety of tasks to keep the submarine at peak readiness including force protection and training exercises.</p>
<p>As a submariner, you&rsquo;ll work in the most unique workplace in Australia having a direct effect on Defence missions and operations at sea. You will also perform additional duties and learn new skills to become highly trained and efficient in supporting the whole submarine. This may include security, firefighting, flood repair, first aid, medical emergency response, ammunitioning or ceremonial duties.</p>
