Receive nationally recognised trade training
Join the ADF and learn a trade. You&rsquo;ll receive all the training you need, be paid while you train and can earn industry-recognised qualifications.

You'll be paid while you train, and on completion of your Initial Military Training and Employment Training, you’ll earn at least:

As a Sonar Technician Nuclear Submariner, you&rsquo;ll help write a new chapter in Navy history by making a meaningful contribution to the deployment of Australia&rsquo;s first conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarines. At any given moment there are hundreds of acoustic signals that can provide information about what is happening around you, environmental data which can be exploited to support the mission. When analysed, these provide vital intelligence and are used to understand the operational situation. That&rsquo;s where your expertise comes in &ndash; to make sure sonar and scientific data collection systems are configured and operated properly, and that errors are fixed without interruption to the mission.

You&rsquo;ll be responsible for the management, operation, routine care, and repair of the acoustic warfare and underwater surveillance capabilities at sea and ashore. While at sea, you&rsquo;ll provide assured acoustic warfare and underwater surveillance capabilities. Ashore, you may be employed as an instructor or in support roles within headquarters, data analysis agencies, or training schools.
Your work will require the highest standards of operational nuclear safety and security. To enable you to perform your duties, you&rsquo;ll undergo a comprehensive induction into the Nuclear Mindset. Drawing on the established nuclear cultures in the United Kingdom and the United States, Navy and the Australian Submarine Agency (ASA) have developed the Nuclear Mindset &ndash; a set of 10 principles to guide our nuclear workforce. Keeping your crew, our people, the public and the environment safe and secure is paramount. By adopting the Nuclear Mindset, you&rsquo;ll help Navy achieve those goals.
