Receive nationally recognised trade training
Join the ADF and learn a trade. You&rsquo;ll receive all the training you need, be paid while you train and can earn industry-recognised qualifications.

As an Electronics Technician Nuclear Submariner, you’ll be part of an historic moment, working on the most significant addition to the Navy fleet in generations – the new conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines. You’ll play an important role in the supervision, operation, maintenance and administration of nuclear propulsion plants and associated equipment. Nuclear-powered submarines are a game-changer for the Navy due to the superior stealth, speed and range they deliver.

Working onboard advanced, nuclear-powered submarines, you’ll operate and maintain electronic and mechanical equipment. You’ll be responsible for the maintenance of the nuclear reactor as well as associated equipment and systems, including airborne particulate radiation detection systems, alarms, instrumentation and measurement devices, and protection and warning systems.

Your work will require the highest standards of operational nuclear safety and security. To enable you to perform your duties, you’ll undergo a comprehensive induction into the Nuclear Mindset. Drawing on the established nuclear cultures in the United Kingdom and the United States, Navy and the Australian Submarine Agency (ASA) have developed the Nuclear Mindset – a set of 10 principles to guide our nuclear workforce. Keeping your crew, our people, the public and the environment safe and secure is paramount. By adopting the Nuclear Mindset, you’ll help Navy achieve those goals.

Operate and maintain the electronic systems that control the nuclear reactor on a Navy submarine to the highest safety and security standards.
