Jenny

Our surname upon my uniform meant that everything he had gone through, was worth it.

Jenny, Aircraft Technician

How it started

I was asked the question, “Do you want to challenge yourself?” by ADF Careers years ago. I had the fortune of having people see potential in me and mentor me. They told me about the Women’s Tech Camp in Wagga, which exposed me to all the technical trades. The role of Aircraft Technician resonated with me most. It was the exact challenge I knew I could tackle but enjoy myself in.

When I joined Air Force, I came in with no mechanical background, which meant my entire technical career was developed from my first day on the job.

What I do

I am an Aircraft Technician at 6 Squadron working on the E/A18G Growler. The asset is crucial for Air Power. My role as an Aircraft Technician ensures that our aircraft are deployable and mission ready, which means we are constantly protecting Australia’s borders. I have also mentored and trained a lot of people on the flightline at 6 Squadron.

How it’s made an impact

Mentoring and training became a passion when I watched the people in front of me grow and flourish. The passion I have for our people has translated through to a team of confident and competent members. When people take on your passion and grow theirs, that spreads like wild-fire and positively impacts the team, my service and the country.

Proudest moment

When I completed my training at the School of Technical Training, I had my dad there in the audience. I’d worked tirelessly to ensure I didn’t just make it through the course, but did the best I possibly could. This showed as I topped my class and received my award in front of my dad. This is the dad who at just 17/18 years old escaped the Vietnam war on his third attempt. He wanted to make sure his future family would have the freedom his country no longer could provide. Our surname upon my uniform and receiving the award for academic excellence meant everything he had gone through, was worth it.

How I’ve grown

I have become everything and more than the person I wanted to become on enlistment day. I’ve expanded on my strengths and worked on my weaknesses. It’s been the kind of career that has taught me to back myself in every aspect. I have far more courage to try and do things that I never thought I could.

I’ve become more technically minded, more confident using tools and understanding aircraft functions, and have had the pleasure of building leadership and public speaking skills.

What I love

I love the sense of belonging. You meet a lot of people during your enlistment and find people who resonate with you. I love knowing there are people who understand my passion, vision and drive for a better ADF. The people are the best and most challenging aspect, but when you find that balance you will be in awe of the people you meet and how they just inspire you.
