To provide assistance via air support to people in need was very fulfilling.
How it started
What I do
My role as an Aircrew is to operate and manage sensors in MH-60R Seahawk helicopters. I’m also able to perform high-end Search and Rescue operations, providing swimmer capability, where we might be dispatched from a hovering helicopter to rescue people in the open ocean.
No two days are the same. Sometimes I work solo, but I can still rely on my teammates for advice and support, feeling comfortable they’ll be there to assist in most events throughout a typical week.
How it’s made an impact
Being part of Operation Bushfire Assist in 2019/2020 was a proud moment for me. To provide assistance via air support to people in need was very fulfilling. Two particular events come to mind. Firstly, ferrying families, young and old, from townships that were evacuating. Then delivering water, food and supplies to people who hadn’t received any support for approximately seven days.
How I’ve grown
I was still a teenager when I joined so I wasn’t very mature, nor did I have much life experience. I’ve grown into the person I am now while serving in the ADF, and couldn’t be happier with how that has moulded me throughout the years.
What I Love
The comradery and mateship throughout the ADF doesn’t seem to be replicated in any other work environment I’ve seen. The options for what you can achieve is virtually limitless. It’s well worth the adventure and you are in control of your pathway.
